The Fervor of Basketball in the USA

The Fervor of Basketball in the USA

Games as potent form of calisthenics are indispensable. Out of the popular games played in the USA, basketball has soared higher in terms of popularity with respect to other favorite American pastimes like baseball or football. The initiation of this game occurred when James Naismith, a Presbyterian minister was appointed as a physical education teacher at Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Springfield, Massachusetts. James Naismith was required to channelize the dynamic energy of his riotous class into something constructive. This led to the invention of basketball in 1891, which became an effective indoor game. The idea of the game was derived from James Naismith’s childhood memories of playing "duck on a rock," which required one to knock off a large rock by throwing smaller rocks at it. This memory coupled with the notion of tossing a ball into a box in a gymnasium by rugby players fuelled the formation of an inventive game now widely known as basketball.
The non-profit organization for basketball in the United States of America was established in 1974 as the Amateur Basketball Association of the United States of America (ABAUSA). FIBA in 1989 customized its regulations which gave professional basketball players the scope to compete in international games. The first professional basketball league was formed in 1898 and basketball in the USA gradually garnered fame and is now played by 250 million people around the world.  The National Basketball Association (NBA) has acquired international fame as the chief professional basketball confederation with teams in the United States and Canada.
